Leviathans are the apex predators of Planet 4546B — enormous, often territorial creatures that represent some of the most memorable and terrifying moments in Subnautica. The Reaper Leviathan. The Ghost Leviathan. The Sea Dragon Leviathan. Each one inhabits specific biomes, has distinct behaviours, and requires different strategies to survive. This guide covers everything you need to know about Subnautica’s Leviathans: where they are, how they behave, and how to survive encounters with them.
The Reaper Leviathan: The Most Common Threat
The Reaper Leviathan is the Leviathan you will encounter first — an enormous, aggressive creature with mandibles that grab your Seamoth and deal sustained damage. Reapers patrol specific areas of the ocean: primarily the Crash Zone around the Aurora, the Mountains biome, and the Dunes. They are not randomly placed — learning their patrol routes is the key to avoiding them.
Audio cues are your most important warning system. Reapers make a distinctive, low, resonant roaring sound when they are nearby. If you hear it, stop and scan for the Reaper’s red form before proceeding. They are fast enough to close the distance from visual range quickly, and by the time they grab your sub, it is usually too late to escape cleanly.
Surviving a Reaper Attack
- If grabbed, spam your boost and change direction rapidly — erratic movement can sometimes break the grab before significant damage is dealt
- The Repulsion Cannon (an optional equipment item) can push the Reaper away, providing an escape window
- The Stasis Rifle freezes the Reaper temporarily — use this to either escape or (if aggressive) knife it repeatedly for damage
- A Prawn Suit with Grappling Arm can grapple onto the Reaper and deal melee damage — experienced players can defeat Reapers this way
- The most reliable survival strategy is simply detection and avoidance — know where they are and don’t be there
The Ghost Leviathan: Deep Ocean Terror
Ghost Leviathans inhabit the deeper biomes: the Lost River and the Inactive Lava Zone. They are translucent — almost invisible in the dark deep ocean — and extremely aggressive. Unlike Reapers, which have fixed locations, Ghost Leviathans are more actively patrolling and can appear from unexpected directions. The Lost River contains multiple Ghost Leviathans, and learning their patrol patterns is essential for the deep-game exploration that the story requires.
The Cyclops submarine’s Silent Running mode significantly reduces your detectability to Ghost Leviathans — enabling this when passing through Lost River sections is strongly recommended. Move slowly, use the Cyclops camera to look around obstacles before committing to a path, and never boost loudly through Ghost Leviathan territory.
The Sea Dragon Leviathan: Endgame Boss
The Sea Dragon Leviathan is the largest and most dangerous creature in Subnautica. Found in the Inactive Lava Zone and the Primary Containment Facility, it can projectile-attack your Cyclops from significant range, breathe fire (yes, underwater — a Subnautica classic moment), and grab vehicles in its enormous claws. Your primary strategy for the Sea Dragon is avoidance — the endgame areas where it lives are large enough that careful navigation can keep you out of range if you know where it is.
