Subnautica 2 is here — in Early Access. The underwater survival sequel that fans of the original have been anticipating for years has arrived, and it brings with it new biomes, co-op multiplayer, revised mechanics, and the same sense of wonder and dread that made the original game one of the most beloved survival games ever made. This post covers everything you need to know about the Subnautica 2 Early Access launch, what is included, what is still to come, and Ricardo’s first impressions from extensive Early Access time on the RicardoPlays channel.
What Is Subnautica 2?
Subnautica 2 is the full sequel to the original Subnautica (2018), developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. Unlike Subnautica: Below Zero — which was a standalone expansion rather than a true sequel — Subnautica 2 is a ground-up new entry in the franchise. It features an entirely new alien ocean world, a new narrative unconnected to the first game, updated graphics, new creatures, and the most requested feature since the original game’s launch: co-op multiplayer.
Early Access: What Is Available Now
The Early Access version of Subnautica 2 includes the core survival loop — gathering resources, building bases, crafting tools and equipment, and exploring the new ocean world. Multiple biomes are available, including shallow starting areas and progressively deeper, more dangerous regions. Several story elements have been implemented, giving the Early Access build a narrative foundation even if the complete story arc is not yet present. Key vehicles including equivalents to the Seamoth and more advanced submersibles are buildable.
Co-op is functional in Early Access and supports up to four players simultaneously in the same world. The co-op systems are not fully polished — there are known Early Access bugs and synchronisation issues — but the fundamental experience of exploring the alien ocean with friends is already compelling.
New Biomes and Creatures
Subnautica 2 introduces entirely new biomes that expand on the design philosophy of the original. The starting Shallows biome is brighter and more accessible than the original’s Safe Shallows but transitions quickly to areas with distinctly alien aesthetics. Deep biomes feature new bioluminescent organisms, thermal vent ecosystems, and pressure-sensitive areas that require advanced equipment to survive. The new creature roster includes both flora and fauna designed to feel simultaneously alien and ecologically plausible — a hallmark of Unknown Worlds’ creature design.
What Is Still Coming
Subnautica 2 is in Early Access, which means significant content is still in development. The full story arc is not yet implemented. Additional biomes are planned. Vehicle variety will expand. The final end-game content is not yet present. Unknown Worlds has been transparent about the Early Access roadmap, and the community has responded positively to the development team’s communication. Buying in Early Access means accepting an incomplete experience in exchange for early access to the content that is available.
Should You Buy Subnautica 2 Now?
If you loved the original Subnautica and want to experience the sequel as it develops, Early Access offers a compelling and already-substantial experience. The core gameplay loop is fun, the new world is genuinely exciting to explore, and co-op adds meaningful dimension to the experience. If you prefer complete games and can wait for full release, the finished version of Subnautica 2 will be more polished and content-complete. Both are valid choices.
