Elite Dangerous Type-11 Prospector Review: Do Not Buy the Wrong Edition

Elite Dangerous Type-11 Prospector review — Standard vs Stellar vs Galactic editions compared. The first dedicated mining ship in Elite Dangerous. Which edition is right for you?

Elite Dangerous Type-11 Prospector Review: The First Dedicated Mining Ship

This elite dangerous type 11 prospector review covers the new dedicated mining ship from Frontier in detail — all three editions compared. Elite Dangerous has always forced miners to adapt multi-role ships to extraction duty — Pythons stripped of hardpoints, Keelbacks loaded with limpet controllers, Type-9s sacrificing jump range for cargo racks. The Lakon Type-11 Prospector changes that entirely.

The Type-11 is not simply a cargo ship with mining hardpoints bolted on. It is designed from the hull up for extraction work, and the difference shows in every specification that matters to a mining Commander.

What Makes the Type-11 Prospector Different?

  • Dedicated limpet controller bays: The internal layout allocates more space to limpet controllers without forcing a compromise against cargo capacity.
  • Hardpoint placement: Mining laser mounts cover a wider arc of the target asteroid face than retrofitted ships allow. Less repositioning between drill sites means faster extraction rates.
  • Refined cargo optimisation: The cargo modules designed for the Type-11 store refined minerals more efficiently than standard cargo racks.
  • Cockpit visibility: The canopy is designed for close-range asteroid work — better sightlines when working tight rock formations in a core mining field.
  • Hull integrity under debris: Mining generates debris. The Type-11’s hull ratings account for this in a way that ships designed for open space do not.

Standard Edition — The Base Type-11 Prospector

The Standard Edition delivers the ship with default livery and base configuration. No cosmetic extras, no ship kit. If you want the Type-11’s mining performance without paying a premium for aesthetics, the Standard is the right call. It is also the edition to monitor if you are planning to wait for the in-game credits release.

Stellar Edition — Is the Visual Upgrade Worth It?

The Stellar Edition adds a ship kit and the Stellar paint scheme using an industrial, warmer palette that suits the mining ship aesthetic considerably better than the default factory livery. Where the Standard looks like it just came off the assembly line, the Stellar looks like it has been fitted out by a serious mining operation. For Commanders who stream their mining sessions or share screenshots of core mining operations, the Stellar is worth the extra spend.

Galactic Edition — The Full Cosmetic Package

The Galactic Edition gives you everything available at launch: all paint scheme variants, the complete ship kit, and any additional cosmetic items. Performance is identical to Standard and Stellar. The Galactic is for Commanders who know this will be their primary mining platform long-term. Ricardo covers all three editions side-by-side in the video with close exterior views.

ARX Early Access vs Waiting for Credits

If mining is a primary activity — your main credit-earning method — buying in Early Access makes financial sense. The dedicated mining performance advantage in the first weeks after launch pays back the ARX cost. If mining is occasional for you, there is no compelling reason to spend ARX. Wait for the credits release.

Elite Dangerous Type-11 Prospector Review: Which Edition Should You Buy?

  • Standard if you want the ship and mining performance only.
  • Stellar if you want to look the part in the asteroid belt.
  • Galactic if mining is your career and you want every visual option.
  • Wait if you mine casually and have no urgency.
